Our search for the best violin makers in the world continues, and these are the finest in 2026.
This is one of our most popular articles every year and we wanted to bring you what we think are the best and most exciting makers of 2026. There are very familiar names and established makers, some makers who are in high-demand at the moment and some young, exciting makers to keep an eye on.
It is important to note that this list is by no means exhaustive, but rather a record of the most impressive makers and instruments that we have come across in our travels this year. The world of contemporary violin making is constantly evolving, with new makers emerging and established makers pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Our goal is to bring you a snapshot of the best of what is being produced today, but we encourage you to continue your own exploration and discover the many talented makers and beautiful instruments that are out there.

A staple in our list is Stefan-Peter Greiner, widely regarded as one of the best violin makers in the world. The more we work with him, the more we understand why his appeal is so universal and his demand so strong. We have sold violins of his all over the world - from early ones made in the 1990s to brand new ones commissioned through us. His violins have earned international acclaim for their soloistic qualities and beautiful craftsmanship. Just listening to world-class players performing on his instruments is enough to see why he is a perennial name in the world of violin making.

This Peter Greiner violin was a commission from a client of ours. It features a stunning red/orange varnish and Peter's signature style and craftsmanship. If this is a process you would consider, please get in touch with us.

Again, Marc finds himself on this list as a fantastic violin maker who is starting to be globally recognised as a leading figure in the field. His consistency in making fine violins has made him our most popular maker by instruments sold! The last two we had sold incredibly quickly but hopefully should have 2 more later this year.

This "Cannone" inspired violin sounds as bold as it looks. A powerful and bold sounding instrument, it has the projection and power to cut through and sound in any hall but with the richness and nuance of the best antique instruments.

Once again, Gregg is featured on our list. His making has evolved and we are loving the work he is currently doing. It is truly in his own style, very recognisable and very compelling. We recently did a wonderful interview with him, which we would encourage you to watch (linked below), where Gregg goes into depth about his current ideas, style and vision. He is also starting to use very beautiful, 100+ year old maple, which he feels will really benefit the instruments he is making.

A typical example of Gregg's latest work. Powerful and soloistic with a bold and contemproary look that lets the workmanship, wood and varnish speak for itself. It is losely based on a Guarneri model but a lot of it such as the scroll and F holes are carved freehand. Gregg is able to do this thanks to his extensive knowledge of old instruments.

A new addition to this list is Paolo Vettori, a prominent maker from Italy, and more specifically Florence. The Vettori family is one of the longest lineages of violin makers in Italy and they are recognised worldwide for the quality and beauty of their instruments. They are performed on by acclaimed soloists, concertmasters, section principals and more.

I have found my favourite Ole Bull model! This is the second one we get from Paolo and I still find it hard to put into words what a unique and special sound it has. One of the warmest, biggest most resonant sound I have ever heard in a violin.

Baptiste is a new inclusion in our list of exciting makers in 2026. He is one of the most talented luthier we have come across in our endeavour to work with younger makers and every instrument that comes out of his workshop if full of character. We have sold a number of his cellos but this makes it the second violin we have had and he keeps getting better!

This overview reflects developments in violin making as of 2026. The landscape of best contemporary violin makers continues to evolve as new talents emerge and established masters refine their craft.
MyLuthier was started by two friends while they were studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London. The idea was to provide musicians with exceptional instruments at a price they can afford. We travelled Europe in search for the best contemporary makers and we’re proud of our selection and the partnerships we’ve developed.
Rare antique instruments, representing both historical significance and unparalleled craftsmanship.
