Dominik Wlk

Portrait
Dominik Wlk is a German violin maker and one of the most striking new voices in the field, known for instruments that combine sculptural beauty with real tonal depth.
He trained at the Mittenwald School and was awarded a German Master Craftsman Gold Medal, then worked exclusively with Stefan-Peter Greiner before leading the workshop at W. E. Hill & Sons in London. He works to a single model of his own, which he has refined continuously over the years and which he now knows in unusual depth. Drawing on the forms and colours of nature, he approaches the work with the eye of a sculptor, and his antiquing is refined rather than theatrical.
His instruments are sought after by soloists, orchestral leaders and collectors internationally.
The first violin we took from Dominik was a masterpiece and we were impressed from the moment we opened the case. It has tremendous power, but carried with a warmth and roundness that is captivating for the player and the listener alike. Every note has resonance and focus, and the change between registers feels seamless, which made it one of the most balanced violins we had played in a long time. The fact that he works on one model only shows in the consistency. An absolute must-try.
Elsewhere

A masterpiece by the very talented Dominik Wlk. It is the first time we have worked together and we are very impressed with the result. This violin is Dominik's own model, which he has continuously refined over the years. He only works on this model so his knowledge of it is very deep and intricate. The antiquing is refined and pure and the character comes across very nicely. Sound wise, it possesses tremendous power, but with a warmth and roundness which is very captivating to both the listener and player. Every note has resonance and focus and the change in registers feels seamless, making this one of the most balanced violins I have played recently. Overall, an absolute must-try instrument!

If you want to see a combination of refined antiquing and impressive sound, look no further. This is our second violin by Dominik Wlk and it does not disappoint! The aesthetics are beautiful, with the one-piece back stealing the show. The addition of wings on the lower bouts give it a unique feel. Acoustically, it is as deep and rich as it is powerful. The balance is particularly good and the E string soars with beautiful lyricism and projection.
