Questions

Bow rehair questions

How much does it cost to rehair a bow in London?

A standard bow rehair at MyLuthier in London costs £90 including VAT, for violin, viola and cello bows.

How do I know when my bow needs rehairing?

A bow needs rehairing when the hair no longer grips the string despite fresh rosin, when enough hair has broken that it feels uneven across the ribbon, or when the hair has stretched so far the bow can't be tightened to a normal playing tension.

Hair that begins to splay sideways or no longer sits as an even ribbon can also indicate that the bow should be inspected.

How often should a bow be rehaired?

Most players should have a bow rehaired every six to twelve months. Professional or daily players will often be closer to six months, while occasional players may comfortably go around twelve months.

How long does a bow rehair take?

A standard bow rehair typically takes around three working days at MyLuthier. During particularly busy periods, please allow up to ten days.

Can I repair my bow at the same time?

Yes. We include a complimentary assessment with every bow rehair and will let you know if we notice any repairs or maintenance that should be considered. No additional work is carried out without your approval.

Where can I get a bow rehaired in London?

MyLuthier rehairs bows at 49 Little Britain, London EC1A 7BH, near Smithfield in the City of London, a few minutes from Barbican and St Paul's. The workshop is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm, by appointment.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes, the MyLuthier showroom at 49 Little Britain is by appointment only, Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm. Booking takes a minute online, or call 0330 133 4225.

Can I send my bow by courier?

We are happy to receive bows by courier from clients based in the United Kingdom. Once the work is completed, collection can be done in person or the bow can be sent back by courier for an additional fee.

Will a rehair change how my bow feels?

A good rehair should restore grip, response and consistency without significantly altering the familiar character of the bow. The amount and tension of the hair can affect how a bow feels, so these are carefully considered during the rehair.
