Stefan Johann Krattenmacher is a German luthier and musician from Tegernsee in Bavaria, specialising in cellos.
He trained at the Mittenwald Violin Making School and then worked across the globe, including eight years in London building instruments for world-class orchestras and chamber musicians. That combination of German precision and international workshop experience is what shapes his instruments, and being a musician himself informs how he judges a setup.
His cellos are played by members of world-class orchestras and by chamber musicians internationally.
The 2017 cello we took from Stefan is a perfect balance of power and finesse. The A string is particularly strong and clear, with enough projection to fill any room whether you are playing solo or in an ensemble. His background shows through in both the tone and the craftsmanship. It is a fine choice for a player who wants a cello that is expressive and commanding at once, which is not a combination that comes easily.
