Matthias von Wallbrunn is a German luthier based in Berlin. He works to give each instrument its own tonal and aesthetic character rather than a house sound, within the traditions of the old Italian masters.
He works from a personal model inspired by Guarneri, and his particular attention goes to how an instrument responds under the bow rather than to how it measures on paper. The results reward a player who wants something to push against.
His instruments are played by chamber and orchestral musicians across Germany and the United Kingdom.
The cello we had from Matthias was beautifully balanced with an impressive low end, but the thing worth singling out is the resistance. It offers a very satisfying push back to the player, particularly on the A string, which lets you explore different contact points and pressures while always keeping a quality sound. Cellos that respond too easily flatter a player and then run out of road. This one does the opposite.
Every instrument is available for trial at our beautiful central London showroom.
