Julia Maria Pasch is a German luthier based in Vienna, making violins with an emphasis on both projection and a wide range of tonal colours.
She trained with Stefan-Peter Greiner and with the physicist Dr Heinrich Dunnwald, which is an unusual pairing and a telling one: Greiner for the making, Dunnwald for the acoustics behind it. Her instruments have a striking golden appearance, and the finish is as considered as the sound.
Her violins are played by professional musicians in Austria, Germany and the United Kingdom.
The first Pasch violin we offered impressed us thoroughly on both craftsmanship and sound. It produces a resonant, powerful tone from the very first note, the E string projects effortlessly, and the middle strings have a rich, warm core underneath it, which makes the whole instrument exceptionally rewarding to play. Given her training, that balance between projection and colour is exactly what you would hope for, and it is rarer than it should be.
