Bernardel Père's cellos have long been celebrated for their impeccable craftsmanship, exceptional material selection and outstanding sound quality. Yet, for a time, the limelight tended to favour his contemporaries, such as the illustrious Lupot and Vuillaume, casting Bernardel Père into relative obscurity. Recently there has been a notable revival in appreciation for his work, and with it the opportunity to acquire an instrument by one of the premier French luthiers of the nineteenth century.
This cello exemplifies Bernardel's exquisite workmanship. Its sound is rich, full and majestic, everything one would anticipate from a distinguished French cello of this era. The instrument has been featured in many chamber music recordings, as well as Hollywood film soundtracks.

Auguste Sébastien Philippe Bernardel (1798 to 1870), known as Bernardel Père, trained in Mirecourt before working in Paris for Nicolas Lupot and then Charles François Gand. He opened his own shop in 1826 and worked for forty years until 1866, favouring classical Cremonese and Brescian models. His cellos are particularly well regarded.
