Cello by Carlo Antonio Testore, Milan c.1730 to 1740

This exceptional cello by Carlo Antonio Testore is a characteristic example of the Milanese master's work, dating from approximately 1730 to 1740. It displays both the distinctive tonal depth and robust character for which his cellos are revered.

The back, crafted from two pieces of maple cut on the slab, is notably plain, with narrow, faint flames that become more apparent towards the flanks, accented by occasional knot effects. The scroll, though not original, was most likely added in France towards the end of the eighteenth century. The body has been sensitively reduced in size, making the cello highly playable without compromising its rich tonal qualities.
