English cellos have been growing in popularity in the last few years, particularly those of the finer makers, such as Joseph Hill. Their excellent craftsmanship and warm rounded tone make them an ideal alternative to old Italian and French instruments. This is a lovely instrument from around 1770 and is a typical example of his work, showing his trademark approach to making. It features a two-piece back with elegant narrow flames throughout. Hill apprenticed with Benjamin Banks in the workshop of Peter Wamsley in London, and his instruments have always been well regarded by players and experts alike.

Joseph Hill (1715 to 1784) was the founder of the London Hill dynasty and one of the leading English makers of the eighteenth century. He trained with Benjamin Banks in Peter Wamsley's workshop, and his cellos in particular are valued for warm, rounded tone and consistently fine craftsmanship.
