Violin by Giuseppe Fiorini, 1908

Maker
Giuseppe Fiorini
Place
Munich
Year
1908
Price band
€100,000 to €200,000

Made in Munich in 1908, this is a particularly handsome example of Giuseppe Fiorini’s mature work. The unusually deep, dark varnish gives the instrument a more restrained appearance than the brighter orange-red colours often associated with the maker, while the precise modelling and confident workmanship are unmistakably Fiorini.

The sound is equally characteristic: broad, focused and richly coloured, with a strong core and an immediate response. There is warmth and depth on the lower strings, balanced by a clear, projecting upper register, giving the violin the combination of refinement and power for which Fiorini’s best instruments are so highly regarded.

About the maker

Giuseppe Fiorini (1861–1934) was one of the most influential Italian violin makers of the early twentieth century. The son and pupil of Raffaele Fiorini, he established his reputation first in Bologna and later in Munich, developing a highly refined style rooted in the classical Cremonese tradition, particularly the work of Stradivari. Fiorini was also an important teacher and advocate for the revival of Italian violin making. Among his pupils was Ansaldo Poggi, who would become one of the most celebrated makers of the following generation. His connection with Stradivari extended beyond his own work: in 1920 he acquired the surviving tools, forms and other material from Stradivari’s workshop, later donating the collection to the city of Cremona. Today, Fiorini’s finest instruments are prized for their precision, elegant modelling and distinctive varnish.‍
