Made in The Hague in 1793, this violin is very representative of Johannes Cuypers's work. The tone is rich and deep and notably even across the strings. There is a firm, focused core and the violin projects very nicely. The lower register is dark without being heavy, the E string bright and reliable. It suits solo and chamber playing equally, and has the carrying power to sit at the front of an orchestra.
Johannes Cuypers (1723–1808) is regarded as one of the finest violin makers the Netherlands has produced. He settled in The Hague in 1752 and worked there for more than half a century, supplying instruments to the Dutch court and to the leading players of the region. His instruments are of great consistency and refinement, with fine golden brown varnish and a tone prized for its clarity and evenness. He is often described as the Dutch Stradivari, and his best violins are held in national collections and in professional use to this day.
