Carlo Antonio Testore perfectly encapsulates the best of Milanese making. The violin is very typical of his work and made in his later period, in 1759, as indicated on the label and branded internally on the back with the maker's double-headed eagle stamp.
The back, crafted from two pieces of plain maple cut on the quarter, has the inked purfling and painted flames typical of the maker at the flanks and middle bouts. The ribs are made of wood similar to the back.
The table is in two pieces of spruce, narrow-grained at the centre and widening towards the flanks. The varnish is of a beautiful dark golden brown colour.
This violin is a fantastic example of Testore’s craftsmanship, offering a sound that is both powerful and beautifully balanced. The lower registers have a rich, warm resonance that is full of character, while the E string shines with impressive projection and clarity. It is rare to find an instrument from this period that combines such depth with brightness so effortlessly, making it a joy to play in both solo and ensemble settings. Carlo Antonio Testore (1693 to 1765) worked in Milan as part of the Testore family workshop founded by his father Carlo Giuseppe. His instruments are known for plain materials and rapid, confident workmanship allied to unusually powerful sound, and his cellos in particular are prized by orchestral and solo players.
