A fine violin by the Silvestre Frères in an excellent state of preservation. The sound is dark and powerful with an even tone throughout the range, typical of a violin from the golden-age of French violin making.

Pierre Silvestre (1801 to 1859) apprenticed under Blaise in Mirecourt, then worked in Paris with Lupot and Gand before setting up in Lyon in 1829. His brother Hippolyte joined him in 1831 and they traded as Silvestre Frères until 1848, making very fine copies after Stradivari, Guarneri and Amati.
