A Maggini model kept by one London principal cellist for over fifty years
A Maggini model cello by Bernardel Père, made in Paris in 1840. For more than fifty years it belonged to a principal cellist of a prominent London orchestra, who kept it with great care, and it comes with a certificate from J&A Beare.
The sound is what one hopes for from a fine French cello of this period: remarkable projection, coupled with depth and warmth in the resonance.

Auguste Sébastien Philippe Bernardel (1798 to 1870), known as Bernardel Père, trained in Mirecourt before working in Paris for Nicolas Lupot and then Charles François Gand. He opened his own shop in 1826 and worked for forty years until 1866, favouring classical Cremonese and Brescian models. His cellos are particularly well regarded.
