This violin was made in the last years of Giovanni's working life and is still inspired by the Amati style and outline, with a medium arching and relatively straight f-holes.
The sound of Grancino's violins is often described as powerful but with a velvety and smooth quality. This violin does complete justice to this description. The overall feel is a very rich and warm tone with strong resonance throughout. The E string can soar beautifully, with a sound full of lyricism, and should the player choose to dig in and really project, the instrument has the reserves to do so. Equally, higher up the G string the power of the instrument comes through. It is easy under the hand, and the wide range of colours makes it a versatile instrument for any player.

Giovanni Grancino (c.1637 to 1709) was the leading Milanese maker of his generation, working at the sign of the Crown in the Contrada Largha. His early work follows Amati models closely; his instruments are prized for a warm, powerful tone and for their place at the head of the Milanese school.
